  • Jill Hyman
    Jill Hyman

    Jill Hyman has practiced yoga since 1974, Vipassana meditation with ISC since 2000. Her practice is influenced by the Thai Forest tradition (Ajahn Sumedho, Ajhan Amaro, and Ajahn Pasanno), Dzogchen (Tsoknyi Rinpoche, Anam Thubten), the many teachers from Spirit Rock & IMS, and especially Shinzen Young (Vipassana Support Institute). She has served as a volunteer chaplain at Salinas Valley State Prison since 2001, heading the Prison Project program with Bruce since 2003. She completed the 2 & 1/2 year Spirit Rock Community Dhamma Leader Program in January 2008. She teaches classes for beginners, those new to practice, metta, non-residential and residential retreats. She established the first family program. More recently, she has mentored new teachers.

  • Jules Rodriguez
    Jules Rodriguez
    Community Facilitator

    Jules Rodriguez is a chiropractor, massage therapist and mindfulness teacher who has been practicing Vipassana meditation since the 1980s. She completed the Trained Mindfulness Facilitation program through UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center in 2018. She has studied extensively and attended retreats with George Haas of Mettagroup and Against The Stream.

    In 2006, Kevin was introduced to the concept of Buddhism and insight meditation when a friend recommended he read Noah Levine’s autobiography “Dharma Punx.” Kevin was inspired by the Buddha’s teaching to go “against the stream” of greed, hatred, and delusion and to instead cultivate wisdom, compassion, and loving-kindness. Soon after finishing the book, Kevin developed a daily practice of meditation and mindfulness. Whenever possible, he likes to deepen his practice through the use of daylong classes and silent retreats. Kevin completed the facilitator training program lead by Guiding Teacher Bob Stahl and has since participated in teaching the New to Practice class at ISC and several daylong classes. Kevin is responsible for starting a weekly mindfulness-based recovery program at the Santa Cruz County Jail in 2017 and continues to mentor those in the recovery community. Kevin is a current member of the ISC Board and serves as the Facilities Coordinator.

  • Kirsten Rudestam
    Kirsten Rudestam
    Community Teacher

    Kirsten Rudestam has been practicing insight meditation since 2000 and is a graduate of Spirit Rock’s Community Dhamma Leader Program. She is an avid earth lover, and teaches experiential environmental education and leads wilderness expeditions. She has trained as a facilitator in Joanna Macy’s Work that Reconnects, and as a rite of passage guide with the School of Lost Borders. She currently lives in Santa Cruz, California, where she completed a Ph.D. in Environmental Sociology.

Thursday Night Metta

Metta (loving-kindness) meditation is a practice recommended by the Buddha to help develop a fearless warmth of heart. With practice Metta begins to permeate every aspect of our lives, inclining our thoughts, words, actions, relationships, and our other meditation practices toward unconditional friendliness. Many techniques and approaches can be used to support the cultivation of Metta. Some of these approaches will resonate more or less with us at a given time. During our Thursday night Metta practice we will try out a variety of approaches and reflect on their effects. Each evening will include a 30-45 min. guided Metta practice followed by reflection on the practice through discussion, and if time, Metta-related chanting.
