Special Event! A visit from Abhayagiri, Thai Forest Reflections

The Abhayagiri Monks have brought the Thai Forest tradition, as practiced by Ajahn Chah, to the U.S. since 1996. Dharma talks are approached in a unique way, somewhat differently than what we might be used to.
There is a story about Ajahn Sumedho, the first western disciple, and his first dharma talk while in Thailand. He prepared it carefully, giving a well crafted talk. Though many complemented him, Ajahn Chah sternly reprimanded him. “Don’t you ever do that again!”.
Monastic practices include a great deal of study as well as the dharma practices guiding all aspects of every day life. There is plenty of experience to draw upon. While one might have an idea of what would be skillful to present, a dharma talk wouldn’t be scripted. In this tradition, spontaneity, freshness and timeliness are highly valued. With this in mind,  Saturday event will include a dharma talk with the intended topic of desire. In particular, we’ll explore desire we should be cultivating and the  desire we should be abandoning.
