    Bob Stahl

    Bob Stahl, PhD, formerly lived in a Buddhist monastery for eight and a half years and later founded eight Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programs in medical centers in the SF Bay Area. He is on faculty at the Brown University Mindfulness Center and formerly at the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Bob teaches MBSR Teacher Trainings and Insight Meditation retreats worldwide and is the former guiding teacher at Insight Santa Cruz and a visiting teacher at Spirit Rock and Insight Meditation Society. He is co-author of five books: A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook (1st & 2nd editions), Living With Your Heart Wide Open, Calming the Rush of Panic, A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook for Anxiety, and MBSR Everyday.

    Yasmina Porter has been practicing mindfulness meditation since 2002 at which time she was certified at Dominican Hospital to teach Mindfulness-based Prenatal and Postpartum Yoga. In 2013, after a decade of practice and annual residential retreats with Bob Stahl, Jon Kabot-Zinn, and Mary Grace Orr, Yasmina was authorized to teach Mindfulness-based stress reduction through UMass Memorial Health Care Center for Mindfulness. She has taught MBSR in the Academy for College Excellence. Yasmina formed a People of Color Sitting Group at Insight Santa Cruz in 2017.

Meditation on the 4 Primary Elements: Connecting and Interconnecting with Ourselves and the Universe

There is no doubt we are living in very challenging times and the need to take care of ourselves is vitally important. The practice of the 4 elements meditation can support connection and interconnection within ourselves, the world and cosmos. In times like these where there is so much suffering, the practice of connecting and ultimately interconnecting with the earth (solidity) air (motion), fire (temperature), and water (fluidity) can be an important resource and refuge.

Through this practice one begins to connect directly with the elements and discovers their intrinsically impermanent and insubstantial natures. This practice penetrates beyond the normal levels of concepts, labels, and categories and begins to dissolve the sense of separation, self-centeredness, and disconnection. The 4 elements meditation practice opens us to the ever-changing flow of earth, air, fire and water elements that exists in all things.

This will be a half-day online event with sitting and walking meditation, along with some teachings to deepen our understanding and experience of the elements meditation.

IMPORTANT: Due to rising COVID infections this half-day event will be held only online.
