Bob Stahl, PhD, has founded eight Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programs in medical centers in the SF Bay Area and is currently offering programs at Dominican Hospital, El Camino Hospitals in Los Gatos and Mt. View, and Good Samaritan Hospital. He serves as a Senior Teacher for Brown University Mindfulness Center and the Oasis Institute for Mindfulness-Based Professional Education and Training at the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Bob teaches MBSR Teacher Trainings and Insight Meditation retreats worldwide and is the guiding teacher at Insight Santa Cruz and a visiting teacher at Spirit Rock and Insight Meditation Society. He is co-author of 5 books: A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook (1st & 2nd editions), Living With Your Heart Wide Open, Calming the Rush of Panic, A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook for Anxiety, and MBSR Everyday.
- Kara Haney
Kara has been practicing meditation and studying Buddhism since 1993 and has been leading Vipassana meditation since 1996. Kara practices the fifth precept of full renunciation from intoxicants and has twenty-five years sober. In 2013 she assisted in starting Buddhist recovery groups in Santa Cruz and has been a foundational member and mentor for the community. Kara attends multiple silent Vipassana retreats each year, has been empowered to teach by Bob Stahl, trained to facilitate Mindfulness and Buddhist meditation through the former Against the Stream Meditation Society, and is currently in the Dharmacharya teacher training with Venerable Pannavati. Kara teaches weekly meditation groups and daylong retreats at Insight Santa Cruz. She enjoys tea, cemeteries, new wave, jigsaw puzzles, and is completing a master’s degree in Social Work. Kara lives in downtown Santa Cruz.
Finding Freedom in the Body: 32 Parts of the Body Meditation series – Wednesdays to May 19th, 2021
We are happy to announce a special opportunity to practice the 32 Parts of the Body meditation, which is rarely taught in the West. This practice deepens insight into impermanence and non-self by penetrating into the true nature and wonders of the body. We will also explore how the body interrelates with the four primary elements of earth (solidity), air (motion), fire (temperature), and water (liquidity).
This methodical practice of the 32 Parts of the Body Meditation can build immense levels of concentration, potentialities for healing, and experience the taste of deep freedom and peace.
This is the 15th year of offering this class at Insight Santa Cruz and it has been truly wonderful. People have frequently reported developing a whole new relationship to their bodies with greater wisdom and compassion. We will also be hopefully doing a tour of the Cabrillo Anatomy lab to get a deeper experience of the body.
