- Jim MemmottVisiting Mentor to Insight Santa Cruz
Jim has been practicing with Insight Santa Cruz since 2006. In the years prior to, he studied meditation in the Soto Zen tradition. From 2010 to 2018, he served as technology manager for the Insight Retreat Center in Scotts Valley, California, where he was also able to deepen his silent retreat practice. Trained by Gil Fronsdal and Andrea Fella, he is a graduate of the Buddhist Dharma Mentor program. He has worked with the Eightfold Path Program at ISC since 2018 and was a co-leader of the program in 2019-20. He is currently serving on the ISC board.
- Karen ZelinCommunity Teacher
Karen Zelin has been a student and teacher of meditation since the mid-1990s when she began practicing and teaching Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction programs. She has served as Chair of ISC’s Board of Directors and as a member of ISC’s Program Committee. She trained at Spirit Rock in the Mindfulness & Yoga Certification program, and ISC’s teacher development program with Bob Stahl. She has teamed with ISC teachers to offer daylongs on Mindfulness & Yoga, Mindfulness & Anxiety, and a Day of Practice. She is currently teaching ISC’s Beginners Meditation Class. Besides teaching meditation and mindfulness, Karen also teaches yoga in Santa Cruz and is co-owner of Yoga Within Studio in Aptos Village.
- Kim AllenCommunity Teacher
Kim Allen has been practicing Insight meditation since 2003 and has trained intensively in the US and Asia. Trained by Gil Fronsdal, she now teaches at Insight Santa Cruz and also offers classes and retreats around the Bay Area and farther afield. Dedicated to a contemplative life of study and practice, she draws from a background in science, meditation, and creativity to offer classical Dhamma in a modern context. Her education includes a Ph.D. in physics and a master’s degree in environmental and social sustainability.
- Leslie TremaineCommunity Teacher
Leslie Tremaine has been an Insight meditation practitioner for over two decades. A member of ISC ‘s sangha since 2006, she has completed Spirit Rock’s Community Dhamma Leader training as well as an MBSR practicum. Since her retirement from over 35 years in public mental health/substance abuse services, her greatest joy has been deepening her spiritual practice and teaching mindfulness in a range of community settings.

Eightfold Path Program series – 2021-2022
As meditation practice deepens, people often become interested in learning about the Buddhist path and in connecting with other people walking that path. We are fortunate to be able to offer The Eightfold Path Program in combination with IMC in Redwood City. The program will run from September 2021 to June 2022.
Participants in the Eightfold Path Program will form a community through the monthly 2.5-hour sessions that include small group discussion, teachings, and meditation. There is also the opportunity to meet each month with a mentor who is a more experienced practitioner. Mentors include Kim Allen, Karen Zelin, Leslie Tremaine, and others. The program includes readings, reflections, a monthly Dharma talk, and concludes with an online daylong.
Because the program extends over eight months, there is the opportunity to allow it to transform one’s life more deeply than a shorter program could.
