Sits, Classes and Programs at ISC

Insight Santa Cruz offers daily sittings, classes, daylongs, thematic programs, and retreats. All of our programs are offered freely and are supported by donations. Everyone is welcome.

Please use the Calendar to learn about specific events and programs. Here is an overview:

 

Daily Sittings

Monday 12:00pm – 1:00pm: 45-minute sitting followed by a short reading

Monday 5:30pm – 6:30pm: People of Color Sitting Group. This Dharma Friends group is peer led for self-identified people of color. Includes 30 minute meditation.

Monday 7:00pm – 8:30pm: Meditation and Dharma talk with Bob Stahl or a guest teacher

Tuesday 12:00pm – 1:15pm: Meditation and Dharma talk with Bob Stahl or a guest teacher

Tuesday 7:00pm – 8:30pm: Refuge Recovery peer-led group for all forms of recovery
*Moves to Wednesday nights 6:30pm – 8:00pm starting May 31st

Tuesday 7:00pm – 8:30pm: Against the Stream Meditation Group with Vinny Ferraro
*Begins May 30th

       Wednesday 12:00pm – 1:00pm: 45-minute sitting followed by a short reading

Wednesday 6:30pm – 8:00pm: New to Practice. Guided meditation, basics of Buddhist thought, and Q&A, with Jill & Bruce Hyman or Dan Landry

Thursday 6:30am – 7:30am: 45-minute sitting followed by a short reading with Meg Corman

Thursday 12:00pm – 1:00pm: 45-minute sitting followed by a short reading

Thursday 5:30pm – 6:30pm: Qigong – simple and easy to follow qigong movements for physical health, emotional balance, mental clarity, and mindful awareness, with Marcy Reynolds

Thursday 7:00pm – 8:30pm: Meditation and Dharma talk with Kim Allen or a guest teacher. On the first Thursday, the sit is followed by Q&A.

Friday 12:00pm – 1:00pm: 45-minute sitting followed by a short reading

Sunday 9:30am – 10:30am: 45-minute sitting followed by a short reading. On the fourth Sunday of the month, the sit is followed by the taking of the refuges and precepts.

Sunday 6:00pm – 7:30pm: Rebel Dharma, meditation and discussion.
*Starting May 21st, this group will be named Dharma Punx. A Dharma Friends meditation group led by facilitator Kara Haney and other facilitators.

First Sunday drop-in meditation 1:30pm – 4:30pm: No teachings, led by ISC sit leaders.
*Feel free to drop in for silent sitting and walking practice.

 

Classes and Daylongs

ISC offers a variety of full-day programs and multiweek classes by community teachers and guest teachers. Please see the Calendar for the upcoming events.

 

Thematic Programs

ISC offers thematic classes in Buddhist teachings.  This brings structure and cohesion to the learning and training of students walking the Dhamma path.

Beginning Classes:

  • Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation (6 weeks – meets weekly). Offered Fall, Winter, and Spring.

Deepening Classes:

  • Eightfold Path Program (8 months – meets monthly, and includes mentoring). Begins in Fall.
  • Sutta Study (3-6-week themed classes) – offered throughout the year.
    • Introduction to Sutta Study
    • Topics related to foundational Buddhist teachings

Dedicated Classes:

  • Integrating Dhamma Program (meets biweekly for 3-4 Months).  Offered once or twice a year.
  • Sutta Study (3-6-week themed classes) – offered throughout the year.
    • Topics related to all types of Buddhist teachings
  • 32 Parts of the Body Meditation (meets weekly for 8 months). Begins in Sept.

Residential Retreats
Retreat is a special opportunity to fully immerse in mindfulness and meditation practice. Residential retreats are offered twice per year with ISC teachers, and throughout the year at the nearby Insight Retreat Center.
