What do teachings of the Buddha that came from half way around the world more than 2500 years ago have to do with the ordinary events of our lives today?  Everything!  The Buddha provided the Noble Eightfold Path as a guide to help us avoid getting caught up in the greed, hatred and delusion that cause our suffering.  The typical ups and downs of our daily lives—relating to friends and family, getting stuck in traffic, choosing what we eat, juggling responsibilities—all provide rich opportunities to practice.  And, as we bring our practice into the ordinary activities of our day, we develop the wisdom, ethics and concentration that serve us when life becomes especially challenging.

In this series, we’ll take a look at how we can apply the Eightfold Path to our lives “off the cushion.” We will explore how those situations in which we’re impatient, angry or afraid can be great opportunities to practice and to let go of views and desires that lead to unhappiness.  We’ll see how bringing mindfulness to our intentions and actions can help us to make choices that cause less harm. And we’ll learn ways to practice with pleasant and positive experiences too, in order to cultivate gratitude and enjoy life.

Meditation

A 45 minute sit followed by a short reading.

On the fourth Sunday of each month the sit is followed by the taking of the refuges and precepts. And committing to the Five Training Precepts is a practice which many lay Buddhists take on as part of their training.
