Dharma Friends : The Five Invitations

Frank Ostaseski’s recent book The Five Invitations, based on decades of his dharma-informed hospice work, provides inspiration for us all to wake up. The 1st invitation is “Don’t Wait”. Don’t wait to live more fully present, don’t wait to love better, and don’t wait to be more compassionate!

This 16-week class will use the book to explore this rich area of teachings and practices. The group will meet weekly and will include sits, teachings, discussion time, and follow up practices/homework.

Given the nature of the deep sharing and “community” being formed, we ask that participants anticipate being able to attend regularly. Please register for this class because the size limit is fifteen participants.

This class is appropriate for beginners and experienced meditators/ practitioners.

Dates: Mondays, October 23 2017 – March 19 2018  *Sixteen Mondays

Time: 10:00am -12:00pm

Location: Insight Santa Cruz, Library

Cost: Dana (Donation)

Parking description:
The large Trader Joe’s / CVS parking lot is free with a 2-hour restriction.
They do tow cars if parked longer than 2 hours, so be aware of this.

The much smaller Galleria parking lot on the other side of the building is free with no time limit.
There is a large, multi-story city parking lot right next to the Galleria lot ($1.00 for up to two hours, $5 daily maximum). There are parking meters on the streets.

Carpooling – Look for a list at the Center for those who would like to carpool. Interested carpoolers can provide information about their needs and the ISC programs they frequent. A volunteer will help to connect those who would like rides with those who are willing to drive.

Escorts – For those who are not quite sure about their comfort level walking alone downtown, there will opportunity to request escort to your car at evening sits.

Bike Storage:
ISC does not have indoor bike storage.  We suggest public bike lockers for the highest level of security.  All bicycle lockers in Santa Cruz require the use of a ParkCard.

For Bicycle Locker usage and ParkCard information please click on the following:

At the River/Front parking garage there are eight bike lockers. The other closest bike lockers:

  • 19 lockers at the Cedar/Church St. garage
  • 16 lockers at the Locust St. garage
  • 20 lockers at City Hall

ISC Move to Galleria

From: Guiding Teacher Bob Stahl

Dear Insight Santa Cruz Community,

On behalf of the ISC board and teachers, I want to share some wonderful and important news with you. We are moving forward with renting a space at the Galleria, which is the same place we discussed renting last summer.  The owners have agreed to a better layout to meet our needs, and we are planning to move there in early August 2016. This move begins a new phase that comes naturally after a number of years at the Fair St. location. The new location and space will allow us to serve a larger community and to be more centrally located.

As you know, we have been looking for a new place since last summer, as our lease will be up in August 2016. Being located in downtown Santa Cruz, we will be more accessible to people in surrounding communities as well as be able to serve a more diverse population. Our new space will have a larger main meditation hall plus an additional classroom, so that two groups can meet simultaneously. This will support the further blossoming of ISC programs. There will also be a kitchen area, library, and an office.

We will be in regular contact with you since we need your help for this transition to come to its full potential. There will be many opportunities for you to engage in the process of creating our new center. We will also be planning a fundraising drive to help support tenant improvements.

We plan to make this transition part of our mindfulness practice and aspire to be as wise, kind, honest, and as skillful as possible. We will be transparent, include you in seeing the plans, and keep you up-to-date with developments. We will also be putting a lot of thought and effort in supporting everyone moving to our new Insight Santa Cruz Center with no one left behind!  If you would like to contact us, please send an email to email hidden; JavaScript is required

Metta,

Bob Stahl (Guiding Teacher Insight Santa Cruz)
